NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Defensive end Bobby McCray is returning to New Orleans only one month after the Saints unexpectedly waived him.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says McCray signed a one-year contract on Thursday, the same day fifth-round draft choice Matt Tennant signed a four-year deal.

McCray, a six-year veteran, was with the Saints the past two seasons, playing in all 32 regular season games and started eight. He also started all three playoff games last season during the Saints’ Super Bowl championship run.

Tennant started three seasons at center for Boston College.

The Saints also have waived former LSU linebacker Harry Coleman, as well as linebacker Sam Maxwell, defensive end Brandon Sharpe and cornerback Marcell Young.

Want to get a handle on just how much of a hot-button topic Albert Haynesworth is in Washington?
Consider that Stan Kasten, the president of the Washington Nationals, has recently weighed in on the defensive tackle. Yes, Kasten took to the airwaves on ESPN 980 in D.C. and looked at the situation from his point of view, one that comes with more than three decades of work in the sports industry. Kasten is a former general manager and president of the Atlanta Hawks and presided over much of the success of the Atlanta Braves when he was their president. Kasten has a good idea what winning spots franchises look like, even if the Nationals aren’t there.

The topic came up for Kasten when he was on the radio during a segment called Lunch with a Legend. Let’s just say he wound up comparing Haynesworth to someone you would never consider—John Rocker, the villified former relief pitcher. Yes, that John Rocker.
“I was distressed, let’s put it that way,” Kasten said, in an interview transcribed by the Washington Post’s Dan Steinberg. “As a fan, it felt wrong. I know the history about him coming here just a year ago, and I saw the box that he put his team in, and a new team, a team that is off to a great start in terms of perception and hopefulness with a new GM and a new coach. It really was unfortunate.
“You don’t see holdouts in baseball, you don’t see guys trying to change their contract. They’re very tough on some things—baseball continues to be the only sport without a real salary-restraint mechanism in place—but they make you live up to the contract that you signed. They make you play it out. They make you honor it, and at least in the case of breaching contracts, they’re very good.
“Because it has hurt the player, it’s hurt all the rest of the players. And this was the rarest of all possibilities. I only had it once in my career, where teammates would come out against a player. That never happens. The one time in my life that it happened was with John Rocker, but that happened here, and that should be all you need to know about what was right and what was wrong.”
Wow. Kasten is right. Some of Haynesworth’s teammates have come out and publicly chastised him. Now, he didn’t attack people’s racial or sexual backgrounds like Rocker did, but Kasten’s point is it’s very, very unusual to see professional athletes come out and criticize teammates. That’s what Haynesworth will have to work against when he reports to training camp. It will be a formidable obstacle.

As far as Marty Mornhinweg is concerned, Michael Vick is looking good for the Philadelphia Eagles.
That is what the team’s offensive coordinator told the Newport Daily Press as the team ramps up preparation for training camp where, barring anything unexpected at this point, Vick will be the team’s backup quarterback.
“I think he’s back,” said Mornhinweg, who was instrumental with coach Andy Reid in Vick landing in Philadelphia last summer.
“In our mini camps, you could see that great, great athleticism,” Mornhinweg said. “I would expect great things from Michael Vick this year.”
It will be interesting to see what the Eagles have in mind for Vick on game day during the regular season. Will they be hesitant to turn to him as much in a wildcat package? For starters, they need to make certain starter Kevin Kolb is completely comfortable. They also don’t want Vick getting hurt with only Northwestern rookie Mike Kafka behind him. Maybe we’ll get a hint as to what the Eagles have in mind in the preseason. When we assume Vick will still be on the roster.

The Cleveland Browns are being sued by former center LeCharles Bentley, who has alleged fraud and negligent misrepresentation, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Bentley is the second former player to sue the Browns due to their problems with staph infections, following former wide receiver Joe Jurevicius

Bentley’s career was ended after suffering a staph infection.
“The Browns convinced LeCharles to rehab at their facility,” Bentley’s lawyer, Shannon Polk, said. Nothing required him to do it. That wasn’t part of his job. They told him their facility was the best and that they had successfully helped others. But they never told him about a host of unsanitary conditions there, and they never told him about the list of others who contracted staph before he chose to rehab there.
“Had the Browns disclosed that stuff to him, had they been straight with him, he would have never agreed to rehab at their training facility. The man nearly died from the staph infection he got there.”
Bentley is now a sportstalk radio host in Cleveland.
His lawyer said he’s not going to comment on the case.

After wasting no time signing RB Harvey Unga to a four-year contract six days after having selected him in the seventh round of the supplemental draft, the Bears are very likely, we hear, to reserve a roster spot for Brigham Young’s all-time leading rusher. “He’s a short-yardage specialist who can move the pile, which the team didn’t really have,” said one team insider. “Unga could fill the No. 3 RB role and also play fullback and save a roster spot by filling two roles.” What Unga also does is threaten the status of backup RBs Garrett Wolfe and Kahlil Bell, as well as FBs Eddie Williams and Will Ta’ufo’ou. “In each of their cases, the ability to perform well on special teams, which Wolfe has proven he can do, will be key,” the insider said. It’s worth noting that three of the Bears’ top eight special-teams players in terms of playing time last season — Jamar Williams, Darrell McClover and Adrian Peterson — are no longer with the team.
He’s a pass-rushing specialist and could share time with DEs Alex Brown and Jimmy Wilkerson opposite DE Charles Grant.
New Orleans also signed fifth-round pick Matt Tennant to a four-year deal. Tennant will back up Jonathan Goodwin at center.
In PFW’s 2010 Draft Preview, PFW personnel analyst Nolan Nawrocki wrote that the Boston College product is “smart, tough, durable and experienced and has solid developmental potential.”

With the NCAA partaking in a thorough investigation of the North Carolina football program, head coach Butch Davis made his first public comments about the process during an appearance at the Triangle Pigskin Preview.
“As we go through this review there are things that obviously the NCAA has asked us not to talk about,” Davis said in his opening statement.
“We are doing absolutely everything from a cooperating standpoint. The NCAA has assured us that they will make this as quick and as soon as possible.”
As the NFP’s Aaron Wilson reported on Monday, UNC athletic department officials are concerned that defensive tackle Marvin Austin will be suspended for his entire senior year due to alleged NCAA violations involving extra benefits from agents, middlemen and marketing representatives.
The NCAA continues to gather information, and Austin might not be the only North Carolina player to face punishment. NCAA investigators also reportedly have interviewed wide receiver Greg Little, safety Deunta Williams, cornerback Kendric Burney and linebackers Bruce Carter and Quan Sturdivant.
The NCAA has requested phone records and asked players to detail all interaction involving agents.

The Chiefs announced Thursday that they have agreed to terms with 2010 third-round draft pick TE Tony Moeaki. Details of the contract were not disclosed.
Moeaki, the second of Kansas City’s two third-round picks and the 93rd selection overall, saw action in 48 games (15 starts) at Iowa, catching 76 passes for 953 yards with 11 TDs. He started 10 games for the Hawkeyes as a senior in 2009, producing 30 receptions for 387 yards with four TDs.
In PFW’s 2010 Draft Preview, personnel analyst Nolan Nawrocki wrote that the 6-3, 252-pound Moeaki “concentrates in traffic and shows nice eye-hand coordination” but “is injury-prone and durability is a major concern.”
Moeaki, who impressed with his pass-catching ability in offseason practices, is expected to compete for the starting tight end job with Leonard Pope in training camp.
